Sources of Inspiration

When it comes to writing, staying motivated, etc. I think it's pretty helpful to follow other writers and hear what they have to say.

As of today, there are three main sites / sources I follow regularly, where by regularly I mean I read or listen to nearly everything they publish. Here they are:

1. Writing Excuses

Nobody should be surprised, as I think this is widely recognized as the best writing podcast there is. Brandon Sanderson, Mary Robinette-Kowal, Dan Wells, and Howard Tayler host. They bring their unique experiences from all sorts of writing and creative work in mostly the traditional / mainstream outlets. It's great to hear what these guys think, because they're well-respected Pros, but they're still really engaging, approachable, and humble about their craft.

2. The Story Grid

Tim Grahl is an aspiring writer, and Shawn Coyne is a professional editor with 25+ years experience. Tim asks Shawn all the questions you and I would love to ask a pro like Shawn if we only had access to him. This podcast is, in many ways, a narrative. I wouldn't jump in at the middle, rather I'd start at the beginning and listen all the way through, learning from all the advice Shawn gives Tim as Tim works his way through his first fiction novel.

BTW, let's not sell Tim short. While he's new to writing Fiction, he's a marketing guy with a ton of success in helping other authors launch and sell their books.

3. Helping Writers Become Authors

KM Weiland is a prolific content producer, she writes constantly about the craft of writing, and somehow finds time to put out novels on a regular pace as well. I'd point to KM as the model of how to live the indie-author dream. She's incredibly open and helpful, and has developed quite the fan following.

I mostly listen to her podcast, but she's got a bunch of books on writing and story structure, and has a very active blog and video blog as well.
