Can I Charge for Beta Reading?

We’ve been getting a question from readers that I want to answer clearly, because it gets at something we believe in deeply here at BetaBooks.

Can I charge for beta reading?

No. And this isn’t just a site policy. It’s about what a beta actually is.

At its heart, a beta read is a test: does this book resonate with its ideal readers? An author is looking for honest, genuine reactions from someone who actually likes their kind of book. That is market research, not a professional service the way editing is.

Paid beta reading gets in the way of that.

When money is involved, the relationship changes. A paid reader has a job to finish. A real reader needs to be free to quit partway through. Stopping is itself useful feedback — it tells the author the book didn’t hold someone who should have loved it. You can’t buy that kind of honesty, and you shouldn’t try to.

We believe beta reading works because it is voluntary. It keeps the feedback honest, it keeps the opportunities fair, and it lets authors build real relationships with readers who are genuinely excited about their work.

If you want to find authors to read for, join the Reader Directory. I also added this to our FAQ.

And as always, please reach out to me at pam@betabooks.co with any questions.
